"Harry Potter's World" open

J.K. Rowling, as magical as her stories are, aren't spun from her imagination alone; she employed an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of magic in her "Harry Potter" books. Today, the Main Library opens an exhibit about the Rowling's references in "Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic and History," and will host related programs for all ages during the run of the exhibit.

Readers familiar with Professor Sprout's screaming mandrake roots and Professor Snape's polyjuice potion will learn their traditional derivation, and the six-panel exhibit, using materials from the National Library of Medicine, will also relay information on the historical links to the characters in J.K. Rowling's books.

Bookends Cafe in the Cox Creative Center, also part of the Central Arkansas Library System, in the curved building at 120 River Market Ave., will offer Quidditch Player's Pie, Bertie Botts Every Flavor Smoothie, Butterscotch "Butterbeer" Latte, and Cauldren Cakes throughout the exhibit, which ends Aug. 11.
