Discovery News has a wonderful story about the Land Art Generator Initiative, which encourages the creation of renewable energy sources that integrate art into their design. Hence power-generating stalks, an answer to the problems with turbine blades that chop up birds and bats that is, as you can see above, aesthetically astonishing. From the story:
The designers came up with the idea for the planned city Masdar, a 2.3-square-mile, automobile-free area being built outside of Abu Dhabi. Atelier DNA’s "Windstalk"project came in second in the Land Art Generator competition a contest sponsored by Madsar to identify the best work of art that generates renewable energy from a pool of international submissions.
So what was first place, you ask? Power-generating pyramids, too complex for me to wrap my head around this early in the morning. But it all gives me hope for the future.
