Mac Hornecker, a sculptor of monumental pieces and professor at Henderson State University, died en route to UAMS last night, art department chair Katherine Strause said today. His wife, Marie, was driving him and attempted CPR. The cause of death is not yet known.

Hornecker was said to working on a major commission at the time of his death; he's placed several large sculptures in Iowa, where he lived for many years, and other Midwest sites. One of his works was unveiled recently at the Bernice Sculpture Garden in downtown Little Rock and he has shown in at least two Delta Exhibitions at the Arkansas Arts Center, winning the Delta Award in 2006. One of his sculptures was chosen for the Exchange Street sculpture path in Hot Springs. He graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1968 and earned his MFA from the University of Oklahoma in 1970.

"I've known a lot of art professors in my time," Strause said. "This guy was the real deal and we're just that much more ignorant for his loss."

UPDATE: Strause provided this link to a story about Hornecker.
