Much heartbreak this morning with the news that Yarnell's Ice Cream will be no more. After 79 years of operation, operators at the plant started telling employees who came in around 2 a.m. this morning that they're done. Far more over on the Arkansas Blog about it.

I had a chance for a rare behind-the-scenes visit last year. Such history... and what a great family-run business. I am sorry to see them go. No one makes a better Ozark Black Walnut. No one.

Feel free to share your Yarnell's memories here.

UPDATE: Purple Cow, which has used Yarnell's at its three Arkansas locations, will be out of Yarnell's ice cream within 48 hours. They'll be switching to Blue Bell. "We have a truck on the way from them now, we will run out of Yarnell's this weekend and move to Blue Bell," says Todd Gold, president of Purple Cow Restaurants. "It has been almost 22 years that Purple Cow Arkansas has done business with Yarnell's, they were a great Arkansas company and our hearts go out to the 200 plus families that lost jobs."

Twitter has been aglow with reports from people tracking down the last cartons of Yarnell's.

And I blubber on about it on Tie Dye Travels.

UPDATE: A grass roots effort to encourage Blue Bell to purchase the Yarnell's plant and reopen it is on Facebook.
