More crawfish than you'll see elsewhere in the state

Come Friday night — the largest crawfish boil in the state of Arkansas, I kid you not. And it’s for a good cause.

Craws for a Cause benefit’s the Baptist Health NICU — raising money that will go towards special incubator beds for premature infants. Those beds cost about $35,000 each.

I got to talking a few days ago with Scotty Adams about the event. We got to talking about the whole idea behind the event.

“It’s a party first and a charity second,” he mentioned. And it’s grown over the past few years. It started out as “Craws for Paws,” a fundraiser to benefit the humane society. But a couple of years ago Adams’ son was born premature at Baptist Health. There were very few Giraffe-OMNI incubator beds available for preemies — and the fact that Aidan had access to one probably saved his life. Adams saw a need that he could help fill.

And it is a very big deal. “We will do 20,000 pounds of crawfish this year,” he told me, mentioning that last year 4500 people came out for the event and this year 6000 are expected to show up out at Dickey-Stephens Ball Park. And it’s not just crawfish. It’s jambalaya, corn on the cob, potatoes, soda and beer — all you can eat and drink for your admission ($45 in advance, $55 at the door). Kids will hang out in the playground, there will be live music and much celebration going on. Think I’ll drop by, too. Go check out the website for more information.
