Local things first:
1. Big, fat props are due to the Little Rock Film Festival for having the foresight to choose a little, unexpecting movie called “Winter’s Bone” to open up their 2010 festival. The Ozark drama was nominated for four major Oscars (including Best Picture), which should look great on LRFF’s resume. It upset “The Town,” which many expected to take the tenth Best Pic spot.
2. “True Grit” ended up defying a lot of tenuous expectations following lackluster showings at the Director’s Guild of America and Golden Globe awards. And congratulations to Charles Portis; “True Grit” was nominated for “Best Adapted Screenplay.” (Do people who write the source material for Oscar-winning adapted screenplays win an Academy Award, as well?)
3. Even more congratulations are in order for Josh Fox, no stranger to Arkansas, for a well-deserved Best Documentary nomination for “Gasland.”
Overall, this morning’s big winners were “The King’s Speech,” which led the pack with 12 nods, followed by “True Grit” with ten and “Inception” and “The Social Network” with 8 a piece.
