The House: Lunch is over

NACHOS: Now, whats for dinner
Starting today, The House is no longer serving weekday lunches. Good reasons, though. Josh Blevins' Facebook message repeated for your reading pleasure on the jump.

The message:
Dear Friends of The House,

Beginning today, The House will stop serving weekday lunches. We'll be open Monday through Friday from 5 pm until late (at least 11 pm) and weekends from 10 am until late. We don't want to have to do this to you, but hear us out.

We're going to shoot straight. Despite the fact that we're open roughly the same number of hours for lunch as we are for dinner and brunch combined, our weekday lunches account for only about 15% of the total food and drink we serve. This is true mostly because we're a neighborhood place. There are far more people in Hillcrest in the evenings and on weekends than there are during the workday. (Until the Hillcrest Residents Association finally pools all of our money and wins us each a well-deserved share of the Powerball so that every neighborhood resident can quit her job and stay home during the day, things are going to stay that way.)

The House's food and labor costs are significantly higher than industry standards. We use high-quality ingredients to make our simple, honest food. We pay our staff well. (We can't imagine doing business any other way.) The physical limitations of running a restaurant in a 100-year-old house mean that we have to have a lot of staff on-hand in order to ensure good service. In that vein, it takes about the same number of folks to prepare and serve great food to 15% of you during lunch as it does to prepare and serve food to 85% of you in the evenings and on weekends. That's whack, right?

In short, we're running one of Little Rock's largest non-profit organizations during our lunchtime hours. We're really just a fancy soup kitchen until 5:00 in the evening. In all seriousness—seriously, we're not kidding—we've only kept our lunch hours around this long as a service to the neighborhood. We know that sounds silly, but it's true.

Our nights and weekends have long been the core of our business, and we're looking forward to being able to focus on them full-time. We'll be beefing-up what we do at night; stay tuned-in and we think you'll like what's coming.

One last thing—all the great lunchtime-only entrees you enjoy will be added to the evening menu, so now you can enjoy some delicious Ahi tuna tacos at night! Christmas comes early!

So that's that. Come eat and drink with us after work, and come brunch with us on the weekends. We love you, and are honored every day that you love us back.

If there's ever anything we can do better, please let us know.
