The U of A plans to build a memorial to Silas Hunt, the first African American student at the Law School, and will commission an artist to do the work. The UA's Public Art Oversight Committee is looking for "something that will represent Silas and his importance to the University of Arkansas to current and future generations." It has a budget of $30,000.

Hunt entered the UA on Feb. 2, 1948, but died of tuberculosis the following year before he could complete his degree.

Brad Choate is chair of the art committee. Here's the UA press release. It has a phone number for assistant art professor Bethany Springer. It's not immediately clear whether the University is issuing a call to artists or will invite artists to apply.
