Dinner for $6? The heck you say. But it’s true. There’s a place up in El Paso where you can get a number of different plate lunches or dinners for just six bucks. And the best part is, it’s all pretty good.

We went over to Hutt’s to grab lunch on a Sunday afternoon recently, my mom and daughter and I. Mom had been going by there for some time, and she wanted to give me a chance to see all they had to offer.

The menu contained several selections — a hamburger and a chicken sandwich, fried chicken, fried catfish, a beef burrito and chicken burrito. Each came with a side item. Child plates were half price.

We placed our order at the counter and had a seat. The décor inside Hutt’s is a mishmash of country and road items blended with Western. Strangest are the corner booths, made from surreys. Very, very odd, but comfortable nonetheless.

Mom went up to get the complimentary chips and salsa, then I went to get the tea. Hunter went to town on the sweetish cumin-laced salsa.

A few minutes later our order was up. Mom’s catfish were heavy on the cornmeal breading but nicely cooked and salted, a couple of large filets with a side of cole slaw.

We’d ordered a child’s meal for Hunter, and it came with several planks of French fries and a single thick chicken tender along with two slices of Texas toast. Hunter went from dunking chips in the salsa to doing the same with the fries.

I was surprised by the size of the beef burrito I had ordered. It came with a selection that was either salad or additional filling — cheese and tomatoes and lettuce. It also came with a generous supply of tasty home fries.

While we were there, the clientele fluctuated. There were locals, and then there were men in leathers, apparently fresh in from a ride. These bikers must really like the fact that there are motorcycle spaces right up front.

For six bucks, lunch was pretty good. Mom says they also do a similar special for breakfast, so I’ll have to go back.

Here’s the part where I have to admit — I screwed up and didn’t get the phone number for you. And it’s not in the phone book yet. Hopefully it will be soon and I can get that information to you. For now, know they’re open seven days and that Hutt’s is located at the corner of Highway 5 and Highway 64 in El Paso. If you’re driving through, give them a try.
