Angela Davis paints edgy portraits and surreal figures, and she does that down in Lambrook, in Phillips County. She'll be in Little Rock tonight though, giving a demonstration at the Arkansas Studies Institute from 5-8 p.m. for 2nd Friday Art Night.
ASI says Davis is self-taught, and one of her interests is fantasy art of the 1930s. She recently had a show at the Delta Cultural Center in Helena.

The exhibit "Luke Anguhaldluq: Inuit Artist" also opens tonight in the Mezzanine Gallery of ASI. The work is from the far-reaching collection of Dr. J.W. Wiggins, whose Native American Art Collection is housed at UALR's Sequoyah Research Center.

Other 2nd Friday events: Lee Cowan, author of "Except for all the Snakes I Just Love it Out Here," a journal of life in Stone County, will autograph books at the Historic Arkansas Museum (200 E. Third) and the Pickoids will perform. A news release says a "summer watermelon cocktail" will be served. Hell with the art; I want a watermelon cocktail! I don't mean that, of course; there are a couple of super contemporary shows at HAM galleries: “You Fit into Me: Works by David Carpenter and Lindsey Maestri” and “John Chiaromonte and Maribeth Anders: The Responsibility of Internal Forces.”

ALSO: Christ Episcopal Church (509 Scott) holds a reception for the Arkansas Pastel Society artists in their "Summer Members Show." The Bernice Garden, at Daisy Bates and Main, is taking part in 2nd Friday events with its Art Market, featuring artists, performers, home-grown produce and food and beverage vendors. Rob Walker is the featured artist at Dizzy's Gypsy Bistro. 4Square at 405 President Clinton Ave. and Copper Grill are event sponsors.
