The Oxford American
is giving Charles Portis
its Lifetime Achievement in Southern Literature
award, a prize the Conway-based magazine previously gave to Donald Harington. It comes with $10,000.
Portis will receive the award at the OA's Best of the South Gala on Saturday, April 3, at the Capitol Hotel, where Morgan Freeman
will also accept an award for Outstanding Contributions to Southern Culture.
Good for the OA for building hype around some Southern start power. Enough folks didn't blink at $500 per seat tickets; the event's already sold out. More to make you wish you were rich and fast acting: John T. Edge is curating the meal, which Lee Richardson will prepare.
Maybe it'll be an opportunity for someone to take a fresh photo of Portis.
