The long dormant Arkansas Film Series springs back into life on Friday, October 23 to celebrate the release of "Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant,"
the latest film from Little Rock-based producer Courtney Pledger (Derek Jenkins profiled her in the Times
several months back).
The film opens on the 23rd, so presumably you can see it wherever you want around town, but this special screening is at 7 p.m. at Rave. After the film, Pledger will talk about her role in the film and answer questions. Then, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., there'll be a reception at Copeland's.
"Cirque," based on a popular young adult book series, stars John C. Reilly as the titular vampire and Salma Hayek as a bearded lady (the trailer fails by not showing more of Hayek, bearded). It's about a bored 16-year-old kid who stumbles onto a traveling freak show and gets talked into letting John C. Reilly turn him into a vampire. Tonally, the mix of quirky humor and suspense and horror seems like a potentially tough sell, but who can know anything from a trailer these days?
