I have an admission to make. I have a sweet tooth.
Well, I know a lot of people do, but sometimes mine just goes nuts. Just have to have something that’s both sweet and substantial. And I found that best combination in a bready thing.
It’s an apple fritter, but not one of those fried strange things you get at a certain chain doughnut shop. This one comes from Ed’s Custom Bakery in Conway, and it’s something else. I don’t know why it’s so good, but a sliced… yes, sliced… apple fritter in the morning is just heavenly.
Ed’s does some heavenly things… their butter flake rolls are just this side of ethereal. I also dig their cake doughnuts, which are neither clumpy nor dry, just the perfect sort of thing to have with morning coffee. They do good glazed doughnuts, too, and pies. And of course around the beginning of May there are toad cookies in celebration of Toad Suck Daze.
You’ll find Ed’s Custom Bakery on Oak Street across from Kroger’s in Conway (in the same building as AutoZone). (501) 327-2996.
