Now this? This is what a roast beef sandwich should look like. Instead of pressed meat or a sliced mystery, there’s no question about what this is… prime tender chunks of roasted beef on a seeded hoagie roll, with tomatoes and red onions and Swiss cheese, melted together and served up with kettle chips. The Roast Beef Hoagie Melt ($6) is serious eating.
It’s just one of the delicious sandwiches served up on the menu at the 302 On The Square in downtown Berryville. And if you’re headed up to Eureka Springs, you have to stop in here.
The 302... It’s easy to miss, if you’re not familiar with Berryville. Just look for the Grand View Hotel on the main square. Here’s a photo, just in case you need one.
There’s a lot more to love than just the roast beef sandwich, though. More on the jump.
There’s also a matter of decadence all over the menu -- big fat salads, a whole selection of sandwiches (including the inevitable Reuben), and a section devoted to sausage sorts of things, including the monstrosity pictured above, the Knife and Fork Chili Dog ($6.25). Underneath the cheese, the onions, the chili-powder laced chili (as opposed to cumin powder laced) with its huge chunks of beef and mess of beans, and the condiments lie a fat Nathan’s quarter pound weiner… a symphony of beef bits and spices and savory. The bun just melts under all that, hence the name.
You think that’s decadent? You haven’t seen anything yet. On a menu that includes such amazing extravagance as Pimento Bacon Salad, Biscuits with All Natural Molasses, Red Beans and Rice with Andouille Sausage and Pineapple Upside Down Cake with Fresh Praline Icing, there’s this.
This… is billed as South Carolina Strawberries and Cream ($4.50). It’s only served when strawberries are in season. Probably looks a little messy -- and it is. It’s fresh strawberries, sliced and poured over a hot biscuit with real (really heavy) cream. That’s it. And. It. Is. GOOD. Stinging tears in the eyes good. Fight your fellow diners for the last bite good. Oh, my.
One more thing… the ladies room has a shower in it. Go figure.
You get the chance, you try it out. West of Eureka Springs on Highway 62. Open Monday-Wednesday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (870) 654-3952 or the website.
