Backwoods Barbecue closed in January when one of the owners, Doug Chrestman, passed away. But now a new set of owners has opened up a barbecue restaurant in the same location.
Big Belly BBQ opened a week ago and is in the process of growing a menu full of beef and pork barbecue, fried catfish and side items. I ducked in this afternoon after passing by and noticing smoke coming from the smoker in the back. The map and most of the kitchy décor is gone, replaced with neat blue and white checkerboard tablecloth-adorned tables and clean board walls. The restaurant's menu is so new, the new menus aren't even in yet.
Tried the beef barbecue sandwich… the meat has a good wood undertone to it, and the sauce is spicy without being vinegary or especially sweet. Not a bad sandwich.
Big Belly BBQ is open 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed on Sunday. Gonna have to go back and try more when I get a chance.
