Literary Festival: Saturday and Sunday

Dorothy Allison.

David Koon put together a strong, diverse list of "Best Bets" for the paper this week. Check it out. And don't forget, Saturday, from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m., we're hosting the sixth annual Pub or Perish at Sticky Fingerz. Dorothy Allison, Christina Henriquez and more will be there. Get the full lowdown here.

Here's some other readings and panels I'm looking forward to:

11:30 a.m.: Mitch Breitweiser on “Captain America: The Chosen.” Moderator: Matt Dykes. ASI Delta Classroom. The local cartoonist talks about his high profile series, written by David Morrell (AKA the creater of Rambo).

4 p.m.: Jonathan Rosenbaum on “Essential Cinema: On the Necessity of Film Canons.” Moderator: Marc Smirnoff. ASI Room 110. Film geeks descend to hear the long time Chicago Reader critic, known especially for his impassioned support of foreign film.

1:30 p.m.: Tim Hursley on “Brothels of Nevada.” Moderator: Joe Lampo. ASI Delta Classroom. The famed architectural photographer and Little Rock native talks about a book that should be on your coffee table.

3 p.m.: Panel: Song Writing with joshua from Velvet Kente, Indy Grotto from the Boondogs and Chris Denny. Moderator: Me. ASI Room 110. I'm going to get them to play a song, talk about, talk process, and who knows. We'll see.

3 p.m.: Wells Tower on “Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned.” Moderator: Kane Webb. East Room, Main Library. Or go see Tower, a funny short story writer who's first collection is getting really good reviews.

3 p.m.: Workshop: “Cooking with Martha Foose.” With Chef Lee Richardson. $15. Capital Hotel kitchen. Or, and this is probably the best bet, go watch Lee Richardson and Martha Foose, who's new cookbook has been getting rave reviews, talk about Southern food.
