I can't believe this is the best video I could find.
Last night, "American Idol" hopefuls took on the songs of Michael Jackson, which served as a quick reminder of just how many terrible songs Michael Jackson has that I'd forgotten.
In the intro before Conway's Kris Allen performed, we saw him playing music with his family and hanging with his cute blonde wife of five months. Then he sang "Remember the Time" with his guitar. But because of the arrangement or the mix or both, you couldn't hear much of it. Still, he seemed more comfortable singing.
The judges continue to mostly like him. The new, typically terrible one is now a believer, and she made a special point to mention that he'd spent much of the week helping other contestants. Points! Paula was so overwhelmed she had a hard time talking. Finally, she called him "adorable/sexy," explaining that she just wanted to remind people that she "love him, too." Simon said the performance was a bit "clumsy" and that the vocals were "OK" and deadpanned that he thought Allen had "brought the wife out a little early." Cut to cute blonde wife in the crowd looking peeved. Randy called the performance real "Jason Mraz-y."
The Internet continues to give Allen love. Read a round-up after the jump.
puts him at number four on their power poll
(the Memphis girl with the hot pants in number one), explaining, "OK, fine, I'll admit it: He's cute. And his voice had the requisite lightness that one needs to bring to "Remember The Time" (yarlers take note). But he has to stop smiling during songs that are about breakups! Lyrics aren't just syllables strung together, you know." Entertainment Weekly's Michael Slezak
gives his performance an A- and writes...
"Kris is the official season 8 heartthrob. He's like the love child of Heroes' Milo Ventimiglia and the world's cuddliest koala, swathed in a Downy-soft green, black, and white plaid shirt — or matching monogrammed red aprons along with his equally adorable wife.
But Kris is not one of those ''hit mute, refill your wine glass, enjoy'' kind of contestants. I thought his take on ''Remember the Time'' was one of the night's strongest and most relevant performances. Sure, the band overpowered his enthusiastic guitar-strumming for much of the performance — the sound mix has been an atrocity all season, no? — but unlike many of his less daring competitiors, he proved he's not afraid to play with a song's arrangement. What's more, there's a jazzy little growl to Kris's vocal, and an emotional connectedness to his delivery, that has me considering shelling out the 99 cents it'd cost for a download."
floats a conspiracy theory that red lights mean the producers are trying to discourage voting. Kris, Jasmine, Allison and Jorge all got the red light treatment.
