Harvest Music Festival: The Aftermath

Friday afternoon was lovely and sunshiney. Music from Shannon Wurst with 3 Penny Acre livened up the Campground Stage, and Cornmeal kicked things off over at the Mulberry Mountain Stage.

Other than dread locks and patchwork clothes, the most common sight at the Harvest Music Festival has been hula hooping. I never gave it a shot, but it looked like tons of fun.

By Friday evening, many pairs of rain boots had been donned in anticipation of the deluge. Honestly, I didn't see how this skirt/rain boots get-up was going to keep this girl's feet dry, but whatever. Wouldn't the rain just pour in through the boot tops?

Friday night the festival spirit won me over and I enjoyed a hell of a good show by The Avett Brothers, my new (only) favorite boy band. Much to my embarrassment the next day, I also did the barefoot hippie twirl during Leftover Salmon. Oh well. It was fun.

Saturday's skies were gray and tempestous. I knew the rain really was on its way. While rain isn't a terrible thing at a festival where folks haven't bathed for three days, Saturday's storm was intense. The rain began around 1pm, but it didn't put a damper on The Wailers' fans. They danced in the pouring rain for every second of their too short performance.

I let the rain wash my festival spirit away and called it an early night. I was rudely awoken about 2am by the 50mph wind gusts trying to carry me away. I survived the two plus hours of heavy rain and high winds in my hammock tent without getting wet or killed by a falling tree. To my knowledge, there were no physical injuries to festival goers.

I can't say the same for the port-a-potties.

The majority of campers retreated to their vehicles to wait out the storm. Apparently this fellow sought refuge in a watering trough. Looks like he survived just fine.

I arrived to the Harvest Music Festival skeptical of how much fun I'd have. I ended up having a blast and survived a tropical storm. Look for a full review in print on Thursday.
