On my recent trip to New Orleans, I decided to go get some breakfast on my last day. Sorry, but this ain't gonna be your typical coffee and beignets post. The Saints won, everyone was in a good mood, so we decided to go to the Panola Street Cafe.
My friend began with the Huevos Rancheros
above. Cooked traditionally with corn tortillas, black beans, tomatoes, eggs, and cheese, he ate every bite.
I went with the crawfish omelette, cooked with crawfish, mushrooms, onions, and cheese. The dish came with grits and toast. But lets look inside the omelette-
Very light, fluffy, with a seafood taste that balanced well with the other ingredients. The red chunks are the crawfish tails. I loved it. In fact, I may try my hand at one of these. When I lived in NOLA, this was one of the famous Bluebird Cafe locations. It changed hands in 1999, possibly for the better. I apologize for the lack of an outside pic, but it was raining to beat the band.
Panola Street Cafe is located uptown, on Panola Street (obviously), near Carrollton Avenue, not very far from Tulane University. The food is fantastic, the service is good, the prices are very reasonable, and better yet- you're away from the tourists in the quarter.
By all means- tell us of a good vacation breakfast you've had- in New Orleans or anywhere.
