Gettin' Out Saturday: the Early Edition!

Yeah, I know most of you guys that read this blog are still in la-la land, after staying up all night checking out the 30-something activities going on...good for you. As far me, I am ever dedicated to getting the word out early as to what's going on tonight, as I rub the sleep out of my eyes (insert "I'm so dedicated" music here). Here's some recommendations:

Baby-boomers may remember "Steve's Show" locally back in the day. I can't say that I do, but from what I've heard it was the local program, a microcosmic "American Band Stand," where locals shimmied and shook on camera to music, featuring some live acts. For fans: the former host himself will be having a party at the Afterthought tonight. First at Beechwood Grill next door in the p.m., and then move on to the club when Smokey Lane Trio plays tonight, around 8 p.m. Admission is $5 to the show.

Franzia-free zone: If you like fine wine and stuff, Nu Cuisine Lounge has food and wine expert Daniel Schuster for the "Full Moon and Fortunes Party" tonight at Nu Cuisine. There's a 6 p.m. reception and the party starts at 7 p.m. For ticket info, call 378-7500.

Check out the chicks tonight: Shannon Boshears is at Grumpy's at 8 p.m. (no cover) and Sara Thomas is at Cajun's Wharf (8 p.m., $5).

Come loud: Mr. Meaner is the act tonight at Sticky Fingerz for the Graduation Night party. 9:30 p.m., $5.

Fayetteville keyboard-driven punk band Tel Aviv, along with local act Two Spines are at White Water tonight. Check out Tel Aviv at www.purevolume.com/telaviv. This is what we had to say about them in club news: The band manages to keep it scratchy and raw and melodic at the same time. We listened to song "Colour Theory II," which was a five-or-so-minute instrumental. IT would be the perfect backdrop for a reading of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Bells." We spoke to one of the guys of Two Spines a couple of weeks back, when they were playing a gig at Downtown Music with American Princes. They are not metal, as their name might suggest. Add them to your list of local young bands to watch. By the way, the show starts around 10 p.m. Admission is $5.

If you like mo' harder rock n' metal:

Drop Dead Syndicate (representin' Pine Bluff, was' UP, ya'll) at Juanita's. Slam metal, riff heavy, big local following. www.myspace.com/dropdeadsyndicate. Also appearing: Exsus, Allusive, all starting at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $6.

They name themeselves after an unfortunate mistress, but group Eva Braun is anything but. Grinding, loud hard rock. And we rememeber fondly these guys 'cause they were part of the "Toothfest" a month ago, benefiting a friend who had no insurance to get a replacement chopper. Before you go "aaaawwwww, the old softies!" listen to their stuff. It's pretty tough. We called Vino's to find out who the special guests were, but we're guessing the rock kid employees were still slumbering at 9 a.m., having dreams of treble and bass clefs in 4/4 time. Tonight the all ages show starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $7.

And still heavy: Downtown Music has Self-Inflicted and Sounds of War tonight at 8 p.m. All ages. $5.

Any last minute folks going to Eureka Springs to see the gals of Saffire: the Uppity Blues Women? That's tonight at the Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. For ticket info (if they are not sold out by now), call 479-253-0505. I wish I could GO!!!! If you go, request, "Dump That Chump" for me.

I'm going back to bed. See you out tonight.
