On Books: Kaavya and the concept of book packaging

comment

Here's a nice piece of writing on the situation involving young writer and Harvard student, Kaavya Viswanathan, accused of plagiarizing significant portions of another author's work in her best-selling "Opal" novel, and linking it to the corporation ruination today of the author's voice through the concept of book packaging. Sounds a lot like what's happened with the music industry, too. "Hey, we've gotta find that J.K. Rowling for late teen, young women readers and make the publishing company gazillions," they're likely saying. Just like every record company is looking for a next Coldplay.

Meanwhile, not everyone takes issue with Kaavya stealing a little here and there in creating a best-seller, as this writer says.
