Max passed along some sad news from the Texarkana Gazette this morning: Jack Mills, founder of Fat Jack's restaurant has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 70.

I've never had the chance to eat at the original Fat Jack's in Texarkana, but I've had several memorable meals at the Hot Springs location, which I reviewed favorably for the Times back in 2012. Huge portions of piping hot fish, oysters done up a dozen different ways, delicious po' boys — it's one of my favorite places to eat every time I'm in the Spa City. It's always sad when our food community loses someone who elevated it, and Jack Mills did just that for nearly three decades. 

A service will be held Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Texarkana, Ark. Convention Center
