We reported that they were coming a while back. Well pie lovers, that time has arrived. Little Rock has its first mobile pie vendor—The Pie Hole truck is operational and rolling around our town. The Pie Hole announced last week that they would be making their first official public appearance at last Saturday’s Hillcrest Farmers Market Do you think this was something I could ignore? Pie + food trucks…this is the reason I was placed on earth.
I hopped on over to the market Saturday morn. I found the Pie Hole truck parked in front of the Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, a nice place for sitting and eating in the morning, central to the Hillcrest Farmers Market. The truck was offering 4 varieties of pie that morning…I decided to show some restraint and only ordered 3 of them. (And anyone who tells you there’s something wrong with eating 3 slices of pie before 9 am is not someone you need to be associating with. This is America, eat your pie.)
I had a slice of a very respectable peanut butter-chocolate pie with graham cracker crust. The crust was thick and crumbly and the peanut butter mousse dense and a bit tangy (perhaps flavored with a touch of sour cream?). Another sweet option sampled was the coconut cream pie, always a personal favorite of mine. It had a splendid crust…obviously containing a good bit of butter, it was flaky and light. Overall, this coconut cream pie was a bit heavier on the cream than on the coconut, but it was tasty. My favorite slice was actually the savory quiche lorraine, an egg custard with bacon, onions & Swiss. It was excellent, a perfect way to begin the day.
The Pie Hole seems to be in full swing now, so keep tabs on them via Facebook and Twitter. You can find them tonight (7/8) at the Westover Hills Farmers Market (located at 6400 Kavanaugh, at the corner of McKinley and Kavanaugh just south of Westover Hills Presbyterian Church) and again on Wednesday night (7/9) at the Westover Wednesdays food truck meet-up (also in the same location). After a fine showing last Saturday, I’m excited to see what the Pie Hole will be serving up in the coming months.
