The Farmers' Market
in the River Market pavilions enters its 40th year when it opens Saturday, May 3, and adds something new: The "Night Market" to be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays May 27 through Aug. 26. Those aren't exactly night hours, but the name is catchy, and, as a plus, Ottenheimer Hall in the River Market will stay open late for pre- or post-shopping dining.
On opening day May 3, the market will celebrate its 40th with cake, balloon animals and a drawing for a goody basket filled with $40 worth of vegetables. The giveaway will repeat every second Saturday of the month. Regular Saturday hours will be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 25. “Dean The Bean,” the 6-foot-tall walking costumed organic bean, will welcome guests to the Market on opening day and at subsequent Farmers’ Market events.
The Tuesday market will actually open at noon, but there will be street performers and entertainers after 3 p.m. Saturday hours will be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 25.
Worried about how you are going to get your watermelon to a car you've had to park a million miles away? Don't. There will be free parking in the back lot on both Tuesdays and Saturdays and farmers can provide free passes to those who've parked in the deck at River Market and 2nd Street.
