A reader noted that Amazon has posted a job opening for a temporary package handling facility planned in North Little Rock — a “talent supply chain engagement senior coordinator.” I liked the non-discrimination disclosure, which goes far beyond legal protections afforded in Arkansas.

Amazon is an Equal Opportunity-Affirmative Action Employer – Minority / Female / Disability / Veteran / Gender Identity / Sexual Orientation

Arkansas civil rights law does not protect people from discrimination in employment for reasons of gender identity or sexual orientation. Indeed, the Arkansas legislature has passed a law, supported by the governor, providing a religious pretext to DISCRIMINATE on basis of gender identity and sexual orientation in employment, housing and public accommodation.

I wonder: What if Amazon refused to hire a candidate for “engagement senior coordinator” — essentially a human resources officer — who said his religion prevented him (or her) from hiring gay people? Could the rejected applicant argue religious discrimination?
