A 13,000-square-foot home at 2 Longfellow Lane was hit by lightning Friday night and firefighters were on the scene for five hours, from 11:19 p.m. to 4:17 a.m. Saturday morning, putting it out.

Apparently, lightning struck at one end of the roof and traveled the roofline. Fire Engine No. 10 received the alarm and alerted the homeowners, who had heard a boom but did not know the roof and attic were on fire and were still in the house when the truck arrived. City records show the home belongs to James C. and Mary Kay East.

Jason Weaver with the Little Rock Fire Department said firefighters had trouble getting to pockets of fire in the attic, the third floor of the house, because the house was so soundly built, with reinforced sheetrock and wood. A total of 10 engine companies responded over the five hours so that firefighters could be relieved, Weaver said: "It took a lot of manpower."

The living areas of the house were undamaged, Weaver said.
