Little Rock police said today that Maria Borja, 47, of Alexander, was the person killed when struck by a car while standing at Sixth and Broadway about 10:45 Monday morning waiting to cross the street.

Cars driven by Kaleb Abram, 25, and Robert McFarlane, 23, collided at Sixth and Broadway. Abram was driving south on Broadway and McFarlane west on Sixth. There's a traffic light at that intersection, but the report doesn't indicate which motorist had the right of way.

The wreck pushed the cars to the southwest corner of the intersection, where they struck Borja. She was knocked 80 feet and landed on a sidewalk along Sixth Street. She was pronounced dead at a hospital about two hours later. Her husband had been notified and was at the hospital.

Borja was on the wait staff at Franke's Cafeteria, a block north at Capitol and Broadway, for several years. She'd reported to work and then left briefly, apparently to return to her car to check to see if she'd locked it. She leaves four grown children. Co-worker Bob Terrell said, "She was like family. A really sweet lady."

Neither driver reported an injury. Police are seeking witnesses and have issued no citations pending further investigation.
