The city of North Little Rock said Doug Thurmond, a journeyman lineman with the Electric Department, was killed in a job-related accident this morning. Thurmond, 53, had been with the department for 17 years.

A city release said Thurmond was dispatched at 6 a.m. to check a streetlight wire in the road caused by a wreck. Emergency workers were called at 7 a.m. and said he had injuries consistent with electrical shock.

Mayor Joe Smith issued a statement including condolences for Thurmond's wife and son. "Our linemen do a dangerous job and we too often take for granted the service they provide," he said.

James Bray, general manager of the department, said Thurmond  "would go above and beyond and was often commended for his job performance."
