Sabin raises $100,000 for mayor's race

Michael Cook, a political consultant, has issued a news release saying state Rep. Warwick Sabin has raised $100,000 for his race for Little Rock mayor against incumbent Mayor Mark Stodola.

I should say he's raised it for his "exploratory committee," the ruse he and Frank Scott Jr. have come up with — legally as far as the state Ethics Commission is concerned — to get around a city ordinance limiting direct campaign fund-raising to the five months before the election in November 2018.

Stodola is not happy about the exploratory committees. But he's also flouting the city ordinance by using carryover money from past campaigns. He claims state law overrides THAT limit, but the exploratory committee statute does NOT override city ordinance.

Sabin has not yet filed the latest report identifying contributors, though some were identified in earlier reports. The updated report will come Monday, Cook said. Sabin says the money raised since July is a sign people in Little Rock are anxious for change in city government.
