Times columnist Jay Barth speculates
SPYMASTER? Tom Cotton's mention as CIA director sparks replacement speculation.
this week on the fallout should Sen. Tom Cotton
be appointed as Donald Trump's CIA director
(itself only speculation at this point).
Then, there might be a special election to fill Cotton's Senate seat in 2018. It could be a spectacle, beginning with a diverse Republican primary. There's speculation aplenty in Barth's piece — a possible return of Mike Huckabee
from tax-haven Florida; an independent candidacy by former Republican House Speaker Davy Carter;
interest from a range of current GOP officeholders whose candidacy would at least vacate current slots in some cases — Steve Womack, French HIll, Jason Rapert, Leslie Rutledge, Tim Griffin.
Barth sees no obvious Democratic candidate. Beholding the potential GOP names, I'd hazard a preliminary opinion that none would be worse than Cotton. Maybe Rapert, but even he once in a while demonstrates a populist bent.
Scary though the prospect is of war-hungry Tom Cotton as top
spook, it is kind of enjoyable to contemplate his end as a representative of Arkansas.
