Donald Trump's deal to provide some relief for the immigrant children facing deportation because of expiration of the DACA program is a deal only if you're an immigration hard-liner.

Trump would cut the "dreamers" a break only in return for a laundry list of punitive immigration changes, including a bar on entry to the U.S. for unaccompanied minors. This would doom children fleeing gang violence in Central American countries. Trump's list is unacceptable to Democrats and many Republicans.

Trump's harsh ideas drew cheers from one of the usual suspects, Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas. His statement:

"The principles the president has put out show he understands what's broken in our immigration system and what's holding down wages for American workers. I'm especially glad to see him call for ending chain migration and moving to a skills-based immigration system. These kinds of reforms are long overdue. I'm encouraged to see the president's continued leadership on this issue and I stand ready to work with him and my colleagues to build an immigration system that supports the American worker and boosts our economy.
Tom Cotton wants a merit system for U.S. admission, sort of like what he passed (perhaps with help from a little geographical favoritism) to enter Harvard.
