Larry Crane announces retirement as clerk

Pulaski County/Circuit Clerk Larry Crane sent a message to staff saying he doesn't intend to seek re-election next year.

His note said, in part:]

No, I am not sick… I am healthy as a proverbial horse. No, I am not burned out… you handle the hard stuff on my behalf every day, so I am darned satisfied. I simply want to go out on top after working for and with government since 1977… yep, that’s 40 years! I have things I want to do and places I want to see, rivers I want to paddle and camps to make. Thank each of you, though, for making this one of the hardest decisions I have ever faced.

Now, let’s get back to work!!
Crane, who turns 68 Saturday, is a Democrat. The office has operated smoothly under his tenure.  He's in his fourth term. Indeed, it has been occasionally distinguished, as when his office painstakingly illustrated huge flaws in Secretary of State Mark Martin's effort to purge voter rolls and also in his ringing brief, as a defendant, in support of Judge Chris Piazza's decision striking down the state's ban on same-sex marriage. His career includes time at the PSC, the governor's office, the attorney general's office and head of the Assessment Coordination Division.

No word yet on potential candidates for the post, but I expect to hear before long that Crane's son, Chris, currently the state film commissioner, is running for the post.
