Rep. George McGill
, a Democratic legislator from Fort Smith, has announced his candidacy for mayor, KFSM reports. Fort Smith Mayor Sandy Sanders won't be running for reelection in 2018.

McGill has served in the General Assembly since 2013, where he's typically a low-key voice. In the 2017 legislative session, he may be best remembered for a passionate speech on the House floor in favor of ending Arkansas's dual Robert E. Lee/Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. That bill, which was backed by Governor Hutchinson, passed into law.

McGill's statement:
For more than 2 years, leadership all across Fort Smith has encouraged me to come home and serve as Mayor. The one constant that has come from many conversations about what is needed most in the city is sound, common sense leadership across the board.  This applies to every segment of our community. Fort Smith needs a mayor with the experience to get the job done and make a full-time commitment. I have the right experience and a commitment to serve full-time.
