Governor Hutchinson announced today that Craighead, Pulaski, Sebastian and Washington counties would receive as much as $1.6 million to open Crisis Stabilization Units, regional facilities where people having a mental or behavioral health crisis could go to receive treatment for several days. The goal of the CSUs is to divert people who are having mental health episodes away from jail or prison.

A criminal omnibus bill, passed as Act 423 earlier this year, mandated the creation of three units and Hutchinson earmarked $5 million for the operation of the facilities. Today, he announced that he would put an additional $1.4 million toward the CSUs, pending Arkansas Legislative Council approval.

The counties will be responsible for constructing or making available space for the 16-bed facilities.
