Newport Police Lt. Patrick Weatherford, 41, was fatally shot while assisting in a traffic stop near Remmel Park about 6:15 p.m. Monday, State Police said.

A suspect was taken into custody Monday night, KARK reported. More details are expected this morning.

Weatherford was a 15-year police veteran.

State Police had a 1 p.m. news conference to provide more details. Early reports indicate Weatherford was shot while chasing on foot someone suspected of breaking into a car. The suspect in custody is 18. He has not yet been charged. Reports say he turned himself in about 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Earlier today, police were searching a lake in the park for a weapon that might have been used in the shooting.

The suspect, Tyler Jermiale Calamese, 18, is expected to appear for a bond hearing in Jackson County District Court (Newport Municipal Building) at 9 AM, Wednesday morning.
