Rep. Greg Leding, a Fayetteville Democrat, sent an e-mail to supporters today saying he'd seek the state Senate seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Uvalde Lindsey, who's announced his retirement.

Lindsey is one of nine Democrats in the Arkansas Senate.

Leding has had a solidly liberal voting record on most of the hot-button issues of the day and took a particularly strong role in opposing legislation to put guns on the University of Arkansas campus.

The Senate District covers most of the city of Fayetteville and some outlying areas. Leding's House district covers a portion of Fayetteville including UA.

Fayetteville has been friendly to Democrats, but Washington County has elected a Republican county judge and the legislative contingent includes Republican Rep. Charlie Collins.

From Leding's message:

Too many Arkansans struggle to afford housing, to put food on the table, and to afford higher education opportunities that can mean a better tomorrow for them and their children.
