TAKE ONE DOWN: Legislators say it would take a collapsed bridge to pass a highway spending bill. Think about that for a minute.

Remarkable story in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette this morning.
Two Republican members of the Republican-controlled legislature were quoted as saying "Bridges will have to collapse and major accidents occur on deteriorated roads before the Arkansas Legislature enacts laws to raise more money for highways."

Think about that for a minute. The Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, and virtually all members of the Republican-controlled legislature (76 of 100 in House; 26 of 35 in Senate), think more money needs to be spent on highways. They just don't have the will to provide it.

A commenter on Twitter remarked: "Time to elect someone who can govern."

But, see, when taxes are cut enough and the state has thrown enough people off welfare programs, the state will have so much more general revenue from the resulting economic boom there will be plenty of general revenue to pay for highways. No tax increase needed. So just be patient. And hope no bridges fall in the meantime.
