Next school election: for Pulaski County

Ready for another school election? One is on the way June 13. It's another bond refinance proposal, an extension of Pulaski County Special School District debt obligations by 13 years to allow borrowing $65 million to improve Sylvan Hills High School in Sherwood.

The Committee to Continue Our Progress has formed to back the refinancing. The Pulaski district recently returned to local control — with a locally elected school board — after years in state receivership to correct financial problems. The committee has a news conference today.

The Pulaski district has special circumstances as the doughnut around Little Rock and North Little Rock, though now without Jacksonville, recently given its independence. There are disparate interests and neighborhoods from Sherwood and Maumelle (both of which include people who'd like to establish independent districts as Jacksonville has done) and majority black areas southeast of Little Rock and the high-income Chenal Valley  in western Little Rock. Everybody in the district votes, not just those in the Sherwood area.
