The House voted today to reconsider a bill to end congressional district preference
s in admissions to the University of Arkansas med schoo
l and passed it 57-36.
Opponents said a change to strict test score consideration would eventually grow out-of-stte admissions and also lessen diversity in enrollment. Proponents said the change would ensure the best qualified entering classes. The law currently requires 70 percent of the entering class to be distributed equally among the four congressional districts.
The bill goes to the Senate.
