Kalel Langford, 14, of Centerton found a 7-carat diamond Saturday at the Crater of Diamonds State Park at Murfreesboro, the 7th largest found at the park since 1972.

According to a state parks news release, he spotted it while walking near a stream in the southern part of the diamond search area. A rain on recently plowed soil probably helped expose the stone.

The diamond was the largest registe red since an 8.52 diamond found in June 2015. More than 75,000 diamonds have been unearthed since the first were discovered in 1906, with the largest more than 40 carats. Said the release:

Kalel named his gem Superman’s Diamond, for his unique connection to the DC Comics superhero. [Father] Craig Langford noted, “When we chose to name him Kalel, we didn’t realize that [Kal-El] was also Superman’s birthname.” When asked about his plans for Superman’s Diamond, Kalel says he plans to keep it as a souvenir of his first visit to Crater of Diamonds State Park.
