The 'power' of the press

This about says it all: A sweeping bill, already approved in the Senate, to close records of the State Capitol police passed the House today 73-5.

The Freedom of Information Act, a monument to the late Robert McCord, among others, once was nearly  untouchable. It will be weakened perhaps 10 times before this session is over, with approval of the governor and all but a tiny handful of legislators. Some may someday realize they didn't hurt just the hated "press" with these votes, but the public at large. Because the open records law applies to everyone, not just reporters.

UPDATE: And, over in the Senate, a bill already approved in the House for sweeping closure of State Police records related to the Governor's Mansion and perhaps beyond passed the Senate 20-7.
