GUN PROPONENT: Sen. Trent Garner.
Sen. Trent Garner,
on a 21-10 vote, sent the campus carry
bill back to Senate committee.
It's currently unacceptable to everybody — too many guns for every college in the state, though with a requirement for added training for all over 25 who'd be allowed to carry on campus; too few guns for the NRA, which wants no additional restrictions on campus carry on anyone and to open campuses to all. Garner is friendly to the NRA and sensitive to its criticism, so ..... He'd come up with a so-called compromise that allowed anyone 25 years or older to carry on campus, with extra training on dangerous shooting situations. In its original form, the bill allowed only staff to carry concealed weapons on campus.
What's next? Don't know, but the gun is held sacred by most legislators.
I also know Garner today filed a shell bill that he calls a "true constitutional carry"
bill. That seems likely to mean clearing up the ambiguity on open carry of handguns and widen the places where you may have a gun, concealed or unconcealed. If it is "true" bill, I hope ti is eventually fleshed out to allow no prohibitions on open carry by anyone entering the spectator galleries of the House and Senate.
