STRIKE THE FLAG: Activist Allen Coon's Facebook page includes image of removal of the Mississippi flag from an Ole Miss flagpole following his protest against displaying the flag with its Confederate symbolism.
I'm thinking of beginning a regular series of Resistance Chronicles
about people who aren't going quietly amid the nativistic national mood.
Episode one: New York Times profile of Allen Coon, a liberal campus activist
at Ole Miss,
who's become a figure despised by many for actions to remove the state flag, with its Confederate symbolism, from the campus and to otherwise address racism that he says still affects so much of public life in Mississippi.
Imagine the reaction to a similar activist in Arkansas, where the legislature is still checkmated by Confederacy defenders in ending a dual day of recognition for Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King.
