DONALD TRUMP: His new economic plan has little to offer hsiswhite male, less-educated base, Ernest Dumas says. But so what?
Ernest Dumas' column for the Times
this week ponders Donald Trump's
appeal to blue collar white males, particularly after a new speech on his economic plans that forsakes
populism in favor of the sorts of tax ideas that overwhelmingly favor the rich, as a good Republican is expected to do.
Repeal the estate tax? That would help maybe 5,000 ultrawealthy families every year.
Cut the top corporate tax rate? It's already rarely paid and corporate profits are rising as working class incomes have fallen in real terms.
A tax-break for child care expenses? That's of no value to low-income workers who have no tax bill to offset.
Dumas concludes that plans (facts) don't matter as much as slogans. I think Donald Trump knows that.
