The American History and Heritage Foundation today filed an application with the Secretary of State’s office for a monument to the Ten Commandments on the Capitol grounds, the AP reports. The proposed monument would weigh 6,000 pounds and stand more than six feet tall.

A law sponsored by Sen. Jason Rapert decreed the creation and installation of a monument bearing the biblical Ten Commandments on the state Capitol grounds (paid for by private funds). Such a monument will surely invite a First Amendment legal challenge. A similar effort was abandoned in Oklahoma after the state Supreme Court there found that it was unconstitutional.

A gofundme account set up by Rapert raised more than $18,000 for the creation of the granite behemoth. The filing today said that the group had raised a total of $25,000. The law mandates that Secretary of State Mark Martin now “consult the Capitol Arts and Grounds Commission and obtain the commission’s views on design and site selection.” Should be a riveting chat.

Inspired by Rapert, Satanists and other groups are also attempting to get their own monuments. However, Rapert has not been enthusiastic about these other projects.
