Roundabout coming on Fair Park Boulevard; City Board also to hear from Johnny Key

The Little Rock City Board agenda session next week includes a $1 million contract with Burkhalter Technologies to use bond issue proceeds to build a roundabout at Fair Park Boulevard and Zoo Drive in War Memorial Park.

Roundabouts trouble some and delight others. They are used only rarely in Little Rock. They are ubiquitous in many other countries. I like them. However ...

It's worth noting that Fair Park is a major commuter route at the morning and evening rush hour, with a big part of the load heading to the War Memorial lot that holds overflow parking from the UAMS and other government facilities in that area. I am presuming the city thinks the roundabout will help the traffic flow, not hinder it. The work also makes some additional provisions for pedestrians.

Also noted: State Education Commissioner Johnny Key will speak to the Board at 5 p.m. June 21. I hope someone presses him on the firing of Baker Kurrus as Little Rock school superintendent after a year of solid academic and organizational improvement and whether he remains in tent on debilitating the school district by allow continued expansion and operation of charter schools, some failing their students. The City Board has been derelict for years on school issues and made some fateful decisions on annexation (not including a growth of the school district in the growth of the city) that contributed to the state of things today. A more vigorous board — understanding how the city's success is bound up in success of the school district — would be welcome.
