Nationally, some Republicans have joined
the universal Democratic condemnation of Donald Trump
for using race as a pretext to bully a federal judge off the Trump U. scandal lawsuit.
Sen. Lindsey Graham,
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, another former primary rival of Mr. Trump’s, urged Republicans who have backed Mr. Trump to rescind their endorsements, citing the remarks about Judge Curiel and Mr. Trump’s expression of doubt on Sunday that a Muslim judge could remain neutral in the same lawsuit, given Mr. Trump’s proposed ban on Muslim noncitizens entering the country.
“This is the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy,” Mr. Graham said. “If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this is probably it,” he added. “There’ll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary.”
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've yet to see an elected Arkansas Republican state or federal officer demonstrate such principle or criticize Donald Trump. Rep. Nate Bell,
a former Republican, deserves an asterisk for his #nevertrump position.
Is Trump's presumed popularity in Arkansas enough for all of them to jettison principle and turn into lambs? The silence grows louder.
An asterisk also for Davy Carter,
the former Republican House speaker, now in the private sector but not through contemplating a return to public service. His Twitter feed has been interesting.
Also this run of comments:
Sounds centrist. Not the section of roadway where you find many Republicans these days.
But back to Diogenes and a lamp, hoping to illuminate a principled Arkansas Republican IN office. If you spot one, give a shout. I've yet to receive so much as a response from press offices of various Arkansas Republicans (Gov. Asa Hutchinson, Sen. Tom Cotton) for comments about Trump's latest, which he has only ratcheted up in the case of the Indiana-born judge with the Mexican surname. I guess lawyers Hutchinson and Cotton would be sufficiently unbiased in Trump's view to hear his case. Anybody else — woman, Muslim, Latino, gay, Asian, young — would be suspect.
