Reports this spring have indicated hard economic times for the Union Pacific Railroad and that apparently has come to North Little Rock operations.

A UP employee sends word of  44 furloughs yesterday in the Jenks Shop in North Little Rock and other area facilities. The Jenks Shop is UP’s biggest and employs roughly 1,100.

The company discussed some 2,700 temporary layoffs company wide in April on news of a third consecutive quarter of declining freight shipments.
