They represent a dying sport at a track in West Memphis. Southland would be better off without dog racing at all but for the fact that the existence of parimutel wagering on dogs is the slim legal reed upon which a massively profitable casino is built under a quirk of Arkansas law.

It’s a nasty business. It remains active in only six states.

In announcing the freebie, Rep. Deborah Ferguson of West Memphis noted the greyhound event would be in the Genesis Room at the catering facility, “the one with the nice bar.”
