Lots of analysis to be done, but I can’t help but note some movement in a positive direction in the Little Rock School District.
Henderson Middle School, the Walton charter school lobbyist’s favorite whipping boy, moved from an F to a C grade. (Same grade as eStem Charter’s middle school, BTW.) Moving up, too, were Hall High from F to D; Romine Elementary from F to D; Geyer Springs Elementary from F to B; Mabelvale Middle from F to C; Fair High from F to C, and Cloverdale Middle from F to D. Cloverdale, Henderson, Hall and Fair were four of the six schools cited as reasons for the takeover of the district for lack of improvement. The others were Baseline Elementary and McClellan High. The held steady in grades, McClellan High at a C and Baseline Elementary at a D.
Note that these grades are for the 2014-15 school year. The state didn’t take over the school district until Jan. 28, 2015, so this progress was underway under previous leadership. The grades are a product of numerous elements, that include some weighting for student body characteristics. The letter grade is not the grade on which academic distress is judged — that’s from a 50 percent proficiency score of students as a whole and within subgroup of students.
